Psalm 40 begins with a voice remembering Rescue:\n“He bent toward me and heard my cry.”\nThe person is lifted from the Pit of roaring, pulled from the mud of the mire, Established upon a Rock, and given a new song.\nRescue becomes more than private relief. It opens the ears, deepens delight in God’s will, and gives the community a testimony of Faithfulness and Persistent-Love.\nFollowers of Jesus hear the Messiah in this Psalm: “To do Your will, my God, is my delight.” His life embodies loving allegiance to the Father rather than obedience driven by the need to earn belonging.\nBut Psalm 40 has one more surprise. The rescued person finds themselves in trouble again.\n“My heart has failed me.”\n“YAHWEH, hurry to help me.”\nNeeding Rescue again does not invalidate the first Rescue. We do not graduate from dependence on God.\nThe One who bent toward the first cry still thinks upon us."}
